PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Propylene trimer (nonene) is made to react with phenol in an alkylation reactor, in presence of an acid ion-exchange resin, acting as catalyst.
The reactor effluent is first distilled to separate light ends and the non converted phenol, which is recycled to the reaction system.
The crude nonylphenol is purified by vacuum distillation. The heavy ends may be further fractionated to recover a dinonylphenol fraction, which may be recycled to the reaction to increase the yields.
